Although pragmatism and phenomenology have both contributed significantly to the genealogy of so-called “4E” – embodied, embedded, enactive extended cognition, there is benefit be had from a systematic comparative study these roots. As existing 4E cognition literature has tended emphasise one or other tradition, issues remain addressed concerning their commonalities possible incompatibilities. We begin by exploring phenomenology’s shared focus on contesting intellectualism, its key assumption mindedness as representation. then outline distinctive insights traditions regarding nature role habits, in order put forward habit-based epistemology an alternative Cartesian idea-based that dominated modern philosophy. pay particular attention work classical pragmatist C.S.
